Poem Torn Apart

Xiang Yang, trans. Pinyu Hwang

lost in 1645 in Yangzhou, in Jiading
the heads of the Han people had still received
no apology from the last Qing emperor by 1911

the night sky took the sunset up into bed
black is this instant the only sound remaining
the stars too have covered their eyes
left to the wind rain beats down not yet here
daybreak its wide gates

took the sunset up into bed
this instant the only sound remaining
too have covered their eyes
the wind rain beats down not yet here
its wide gates

sunset up into bed
only sound remaining
have covered their eyes
rain beats down not yet here
gates

the gunshots ringing across Taiwan in 1947
were still haunted by nightmares
in the spring of 1989
